Freddie, on approaching the hole, could not find his ball, and, I think, gave up the hole, and then found his ball about "hole-high." The day was of a light frost, brilliantly sunny, and with the faintest flicker of air, no breeze. I remember seeing Mr. Tait measuring the distance to the place where the ball was found, and I think the whole extent was about 350 yards, the "carry" being about 250 yards. Probably there is a more authentic record than my memory supplies. At first, his extraordinary driving was the chiet attraction, but he later aimed more at accuracy, and drove much within his powers. Containing the first print appearance of Mark Twain's A Curious Experience (November 1881, pp. 35-46), subsequently collected in The Stolen White Elephant, Etc. in 1882. The volume also contains a contemporary review of Twain's The Prince and the Pauper (April 1882, pp. 783-784). The Mark Twain Project confirms the November 1881 Century publication of A Curious Experience at pp. 35-46. Of historical importance is Frederick Douglass's My Escape from Slavery (November 1881, pp. 125-131), his detailed account of his 1838 escape from slavery. Douglass explains in the essay that in his earlier autobiographical writing, 40 years prior, he had deliberately withheld the particulars of his escape; in this 1881 contribution, Douglass finally makes those details public. The first appearance of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Hermes Trismegistus (February 1882, pp. 532-534) is bound in this volume. Also, Andrew Lang's Matthew Arnold appears in the April 1882 number, part of this volume, together with literary review of "The Library" by Lang (p. 951). Other contents include a topic article discussing George Eliot and Emerson (p. 619), and contributions by John Burroughs and numerous other writers. Condition: Overall Good. Contents Good+; pages generally clean and unmarked, with scattered foxing and marks. Library stamp of Musser Public Library, Muscatine, Iowa present. Binding remains sound and square.
