Led by ILWU president Harry Bridges, the long embattled labor leader and veteran of the 1934 strike in San Francisco, longshoreman went out on strike in what would prove to be…Bridges's finest hour. With the passage of the Taft-Hartley act in 1947, over President Turman's veto, employers felt they had the upper hand. But while other unions crumbled under the ascendance of cold war conservatism, the maritime unions held fast. The strike closed down shipping along the length of the west coast for 95 days ultlimately winning major concessions. Folded twice horizontally, as for mailing; neat pencil date; very good.
