Signs of shelf wear across the dust jacket, bumps to corners and edges, small chips at the spine, staining to its inside edges, but no major tears or blemishes, cover artwork and photographs bright and vibrant. DJ now protected by a plastic slipcover. Original red binding with black lettering along the spine is in excellent condition. Clean text block with good page edges, very light fraying. Pages throughout are tightly bound, clean and tidy. Description A first US edition hardback with original dust jacket, collectible for being the earliest American edition of Arthur La Bern's crime novel; first US printings with intact jackets are significantly rarer than later issues, adding to its desirability among mystery and mid-century fiction collectors. This taut crime story unfolds around a dangerously obsessive character whose escalating paranoia and violence propel a tense narrative marked by psychological insight and gritty atmosphere. La Bern's prose blends urban realism with suspenseful plotting, creating a compelling portrayal of desperation and moral unraveling. With its brisk pacing and unflinching look at crime's psychological dimensions, the novel stands as a strong example of mid-century British noir presented for the US readership.

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First UK Edition, no US equivalent. Basis for the 1948 British film noir, "Good-Time Girl," starring Diana Dors. Extremely scarce in jacket. "Bonnie and Clyde" somewhat in refers, wherein a young female wastrel (Diana Dors, naturally) runs over a policeman and ultimately winds up being part of a crime wave with two G.I.s who are also on the run. Very Good or better in a bright, about Near Fine dust jacket. Backstrip faded, but titles quite clear, just a hint of foxing to page edges. Jacket exceptionally nice, with a touch of rubbing at the spine ends. A superior copy.
