In-8 de XXIII, (1) 254, (2) pages et 7 planches dépliantes hors-texte numérotées et gravées sur cuivre; demi-basane de l'époque, dos à cinq nerfs orné, (frottements, coins émoussés). Première édition. Dans la préface, dans la norme de la feuille et à la fin du texte, notre ouvrage est toujours intitulée: "Ire partie". La bibliographie n'en mentionne pourtant pas de seconde, on peut cependant supposer que la réédition du texte en 1775 ait été entièrement modifiée et enrichie, sans pour autant faire l'objet d'une modification explicite des intitulés . Professeur de mathématiques à l'École du Génie de Mézières à partir de 1752, il est élu membre de l'Académie des Sciences en 1768. Par la suite, il sera inspecteur général des machines et ouvrages hydrauliques des bâtiments du Roi, ainsi que premier professeur titulaire de la chaire royale d'hydrodynamique créée par Turgot au Louvre de 1775 à 1780. Il perdra sa place à la Révolution mais sera nommé examinateur de sortie des élèves de l'École Polytechnique après la Terreur, de 1796 à 1808. Il collabora également à l'Encyclopédie de Diderot et d'Alembert pour les volumes de mathématiques. «Contributeur majeur à l'éducation scientifique européenne (.) Bossut rédigea une série de manuels qui parurent dans plusieurs éditions françaises et étrangères et furent largement acceptés depuis les années 1770 jusqu'aux premières années de l'Empire. Les textes de Bossut et d'Étienne Bézout représentent le mieux l'émergence au XVIIIe siècle d'un système normalisé et rigoureux de manuels de physique de l'ingénieur» (D.S.B.) Notre ouvrage est en effet l'un de ceux qui ont le mieux permis à Bossut de réformer l'enseignement de l'ingénierie en France au XVIIIème siècle. On le considéra même longtemps comme un ouvrage indispensable à la préparation au concours d'entrée aux écoles militaires d'Ancien Régime. La clarté des définitions préliminaires est, à ce sujet, très éloquente: «La Méchanique, dans la signification la plus étendue du mot, est une science qui a pour objets les lois de l'équilibre & du mouvement des corps. D'où l'on voit qu'elle se partage en deux branches. Celle qui traite de l'équilibre se nomme Méchanique proprement dite, ou Dynamique» (Sur l'évolution des idées en mécanique et statique, voir la thèse deChristophe Schmit: Equilibre et dynamique.
