Eine frühe Veröffentlichung im (später wissenschaftlichen) Julius Springer Verlag, hier noch mit seinem Partner M. Simion. In der Zeit der 1848er Revolution und mit den damit verbundenen wirtschaftlichen Schwierigkeiten hatte die "Volksbibliothek" keine lange Lebensdauer. (vgl. Sarkowski: Der Springer-Verlag: Stationen Seiner Geschichte Teil I: 1842-1945, p.24 ff.). "Heinrich Smidt (geb. 18. Dezember 1798 in Altona; gest. 3. September 1867 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. (.) 1848 wurde er Mitglied der Marinekommission und Mitarbeiter der Marineabteilung im Berliner Kriegsministerium, für das er zuletzt als Archivar tätig war. Er stand in Verbindung mit Ludwig Devrient, Theodor Fontane u. a. und war Mitglied im Literaturkreis Tunnel über der Spree. Seine Erfahrungen auf See und seine Kenntnisse von Land und Leuten verwertete er in zahlreichen Erzählungen, Novellen, Romanen, Theaterstücken sowie Jugendbüchern, die ihm den Ruf eines 'deutschen Marryat' einbrachten. In seinen Seegeschichten und -gedichten hat er mehrfach das Motiv des Fliegenden Holländers verwendet." (Wikipedia). "Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander (geb. 27. Dezember 1803 in Fischbach bei Hirschberg, Schlesien; gest. 4. Juni 1879 in Quirl, Schlesien) war ein deutscher Pädagoge und Germanist. Er legte die größte existierende Sammlung deutschsprachiger Sprichwörter an. (.) Seine freiheitliche, manchmal als kommunistisch bezeichnete Einstellung führte oft zu Reibereien mit seinen Vorgesetzten. Dies führte 1845 zu einer Hausdurchsuchung und zur Amtsenthebung. 1847 wurde er nach einem Freispruch zwar wieder eingesetzt, nach der Märzrevolution 1848 musste er 1849 den Lehrerberuf aber endgültig aufgeben. Er wurde als 'Aufwiegler und Verführer zu Aufruhr und Rebellion' entlassen. (.) Sein sprachwissenschaftliches Lebenswerk war die Sprichwortforschung. Schon als Lehrer sammelte er diese und setzte sie für Unterrichtszwecke ein. Er veröffentlichte verschiedene Sprichwortsammlungen, zuerst für Kinder. Ab 1862 entstand dann sein Deutsches Sprichwörter-Lexikon, die mit über 250.000 Einträgen bis heute größte Sammlung von Sprichwörtern (nach Walther Killy: Literaturlexikon)."
