First Edition in English, translated with introduction by Danile Malthus, father of the economist. A seminal text in the history of landscape aesthetics, first published in French in 1777, is one of the earliest systematic explorations of the picturesque and naturalist principles that would define 18th-century landscape design. Gerardin, who had visited England in 1763, laid out one of the first jardins l''anglais at his property at Ermenonvile. He was much influenced by Rousseau, who died at Ermenonville and was buried on an island in the lake, illustrated in the frontis. Provenance: Owner's signature and annotations/commentary of Charles Barnwell (1736-1802) of Mileham Hall, Norfolk on front free endpage, endpage (recto and verso), and frontis. Charles was a prominent landowner and a member of the Barnwell family which held the estate for several generations. He inherited Mileham Hall in 1774 and is noted for having restored the property. Charles was known for his refined tastes and active engagement with the Enlightment-era aesthetics. The thoughtful annotation accompany his signature praising the author's "judgment & taste" and "spirit of humanity" is notable. Charles annotations offers a tangible connection to the 18th-century gentry class's engagement with landscape theory and Enlightenment thought. A clean, wide-margined copy with some toning to premins, as expected, exterior shows wear, rubbing and possible repair to front hinge. A desirable copy of a scarce title with important provenance.…
