'The Story of John Patterson and his Times (1822-1880) has been written for three main reasons. Firstly, in all humility, we have tried to follow in the steps of the late John Bond by bringing to the notice of South Africans some more British pioneers of the Nineteenth Century who helped to shape the historical map of the Colony, while acknowledging the brave part played by the stoical Dutch farmers in the development of Algoa Bay. Secondly, we have recreated the life of John Paterson and others connected with him for the interest of their descendants.
