Nel complesso, vengono descritte e commentate dagli autori, Franco Agamennone, Pasquale Micali, Luigi Romani, Gianpaolo Franzoni e Stefano Bartolini, 326 diverse specie di cui 135 rinvenute nel tratto compreso tra i Grandi laghi Amari e la località di El Qantara (a circa 35 Km dalla foce del Canale di Suez in Mediterraneo) e 191 provenienti dal Golfo di Suez. Il materiale esaminato proviene dalla collezione privata di Gianpaolo Franzoni che ha insegnato nella città di Alessandria d'Egitto e ha svolto attività di raccolta non sistematica tra il 1986 e il 2008. Inoltre, dopo l'inquadramento storico del Canale di Suez, gli autori esaminano i danni provocati dall'ingresso di specie aliene provenienti dal Canale (c.d. specie "lessepsiane") sulle specie indigene mediterranee e di quali potrebbero essere gli scenari futuri da essi derivanti sulle biocenosi tipiche del mare nostrum. L'opera rappresenta un "unicum" nello scenario della malacologia moderna in quanto le aree indagate sono oggi interdette alla possibilità di ulteriori studi sia per una antropizzazione selvaggia, che ha alterato in modo irrimediabile gli ambienti naturali sia per ragioni politiche, trattandosi di territori militarizzati e fortemente presidiati.
