Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a critique of Lord Macaulay's review of W.E. Gladstone's work on the relationship between theology and the science of government. The author argues that Macaulay fundamentally misunderstood Gladstone's primary proposition that "the propagation of religious truth is one of the principal ends of government". The author sets out to prove that Macaulay's countervailing negative proposition, that the temporal welfare of man is of more importance than his spiritual welfare, is an erroneous premise. Analysing both the primary and secondary propositions, their implications and logical consequences, the book argues that a government that does not consider its actions within the context of the spiritual welfare of its citizens and its duties to God is ultimately destined to fail. The work is a detailed examination of the complex interrelation of theology and government, and the author concludes that a complete separation of the two is not only impossible, but counter to the effective governance of nations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketRare, short-lived high quality satirical journal written and printed in Bradford, with all 52 issues bound into a single volume. The Jackdaw was published in Bradford during 1904-1905 with the intention of poking fun at the local establishment, municipal spending, and the eccentricities of Victorian/Edwardian Bradford society - the very era that J B Priestley would satirise in his novels and plays, notably, An Inspector Calls. Surprising to this cataloguer is the quality of the writing and the numerous highly accomplished illustrations, cartoons, advertisements, social commentary, half-tone photographs and illustrated handbills mocking contemporary news stories. OCLC locates copies at University of Bradford, Duke and the University of British Columbia only. DESCRIPTION: Half calf over green cloth boards, titled in gilt over red panel to sturdy 6 panelled spine; a little bumped to corners and spine top, sides and tail. Just cracking over inner hinges but otherwise entirely sound with a little spine slant evident. Ownership inscriptions to front free connect the volume to Bradford and Harrogate, ' This book was bequeathed by the late Mr P.V. Sowden, who died in 1927, to William Shaw'. Contains Volumes 1 & 2 made up of issue numbers 1 -52 dated between April 14 1904 - April 16 1905. Each issue 18pp, clean, unmarked and in very fresh condition throughout. An extremely rich historical resource produced in an era when provincial journalism was rapidly expanding, offering an alternative, unfiltered, and highly opinionated perspective in contrast to the traditional regional newspapers of the day such as the Bradford Daily Telegraph.
