Les dissensions se font fractures, et les voies moyennes, tentées par un Lefèvre d'Etaples ou une Marguerite de Navarre, deviennent impossibles à tenir. Le mot " luthérien " se charge négativement, et son imprécision autorise tous les amalgames. Un demi-siècle après l'invention de l'imprimerie, le livre est l'acteur principal et un témoin privilégié de ces bouleversements. Imprimeurs et libraires perçoivent le formidable potentiel éditorial de la polémique luthérienne, et oscillent entre raison commerciale, prudence et engagement personnel.
