Hardcover. Condition: As new. Square quarto. Hardcover. Bound in maroon cloth with illustrated jacket. 308 pages : illustrations (some color), portraits, facsimiles ; 28 cm. Text in American English, with translations from the French. "Jacques Louis David: Radical Draftsman will be the first exhibition devoted to works on paper by the celebrated French artist who navigated vast artistic and political divides throughout his life -- from his birth in Paris in 1748 to his death in exile in Brussels in 1825. His iconic works captured the aspirations and suffering of a nation, while addressing timeless themes that continue to resonate today. Through the lens of his preparatory studies, the exhibition looks beyond his public successes to chart the moments of inspiration and the progress of ideas. Visitors will follow the artist's process as he gave form to the neoclassical style and created major canvases that shaped the public's perceptions of historical events in the years before, during, and after the French Revolution. Organized chronologically, the exhibition will feature more than eighty drawings and oil sketches -- including rarely loaned or newly discovered works -- drawn from the collections of The Met and dozens of institutional and private lenders."-- "The paintings of Jacques Louis David (1748-1825) are among the most iconic in the history of Western art, but comparatively little is known about his nearly two thousand drawings that formed the basis of beloved masterpieces such as The Oath of the Horatii and The Death of Socrates. Jacques Louis David: Radical Draftsman accompanies the first major exhibition to focus on the artist's often yearlong process of trial and experimentation, from initial idea to finished canvas. Including several recently discovered drawings published here for the first time, this volume provides a new perspective on the celebrated master. Essays by international experts explore what David's preparatory works on paper reveal about his creative process and how they bear witness to the tumultuous years before, during, and after the French Revolution. As both a participant and an observer, David helped establish the new French society while documenting the drama, violence, and triumphs of modern history in the making."--.

Condition: VG+ appears unread. Glued illustrated wraps. 169 pp., Appx. 80 color plates. Text is in French. Translation of rear cover text: "A subject of philosophical speculation during the Enlightenment, exile entered the lives of contemporaries during the Revolution. It imposed itself as a choice, a necessity, a duty, and an act of violence in the face of the irreversible overthrow of the social order. Beyond royalist emigration, one of the most serious threats that republicans had to manage, the theme of exile profoundly marked the collective imagination and thus became one of the major themes through which modernity was achieved in the arts. While the Revolution brought artists into direct contact with political action, they nonetheless continued to question the ancient past in their work to illuminate the present, in order to offer a meditation on the meaning of History. Through a corpus of canonical works of French art (David, Vincent, Peyron, Gérard, Guérin, Danloux, etc.), this book examines the reception of figures of exile from the reign of Louis XVI to the Consulate, from the From Marmontel's Belisarius, an idol of progressive men from 1767 onwards, to Guérin's The Return of Marcus Sextus, one of the greatest political paintings of the late 19th century. Through this theme emerges a history of the missteps of the "grand genre" during the Revolution." The catalogue lists 27 works, and has a copious Bibliography.
