Dezember 1878 in Budapest; 12. April 1962 in München) war ein österreichischer Romanautor, Dramatiker und Lyriker. Der Sohn des Architekten Fr…anz Kolbenheyer und der Malerin Marianne Eitner besuchte das Gymnasium in Eger. Nach einem Philosophie-, Psychologie- und Zoologiestudium in Wien wurde er 1905 zum Dr. phil. promoviert. 1919 übersiedelte Kolbenheyer nach Tübingen, wo er bis 1932 als freier Schriftsteller lebte. In den Jahren 1917 bis 1926 schuf er sein Hauptwerk, die Romantrilogie Paracelsus. Seit 1926 war er Mitglied der Preußischen Dichterakademie. Kolbenheyer vertrat in seinen Werken eine Philosophie des Biologismus: Er glaubte, es gäbe fundamentale biologische Unterschiede zwischen den Völkern, und versuchte, spezifische Eigenarten z.B. der deutschen Dichtkunst auf angeblich biologische Grundlagen des deutschen Volkstums zurückzuführen. Er begründete eine Schule von Anhängern nach dem Vorbild der mittelalterlichen Bauhütten. In der Zeit von 1933 bis 1944 unterstützte er den Nationalsozialismus in zahlreichen Reden und Schriften, obwohl er erst 1940 in die NSDAP eintrat. Kolbenheyer wurde vielfach während der NS-Herrschaft ausgezeichnet. 1944, als sich bereits das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs abzeichnete, wurde er von Hitler auf die Sonderliste der Gottbegnadetenliste mit den sechs wichtigsten Schriftstellern gesetzt und genoss dadurch weitere Privilegien, wie die Freistellung von sämtlichem Kriegsdienst, auch an der Heimatfront. Nach 1945 erhielt Kolbenheyer wegen seiner aktiven Unterstützung des Nationalsozialismus ein fünfjähriges Schreibverbot. Er lebte in Schlederloh und zuletzt in Gartenberg (Stadtteil von Geretsried) bei Wolfratshausen. Er war Mitglied der rechtsextremistischen Gesellschaft für Freie Publizistik und deren Vorläufern. Werner Bergengruen wertete 1946 Kolbenheyers Wirken während der NS-Diktatur mit folgenden Worten: In seiner großen Eitelkeit war er der Meinung, das geistige Leben Deutschlands kulminiere in seiner Person". In der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone wurden mehrere Schriften von Kolbenheyer auf die Liste der auszusondernden Literatur gesetzt, in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik folgte noch Das Kolbenheyer-Buch (1937).
