A History of Costume is a substantial and ambitious work covering an enormous chronological and geographical range, tracing the development of dress from the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome through the medieval period and the Renaissance and on into the early modern era. The book draws on a wide variety of evidence including wall paintings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, painted portraits, and surviving textile fragments to reconstruct as accurately as possible the appearance of dress in different periods and cultures, acknowledging where the evidence is incomplete or ambiguous while still producing a coherent and usable historical narrative.
