La vida, el pensamiento filosófico, las ideas religiosas de Unamuno, han sido y siguen siendo objeto de numerosos estudios. Se ha abordado incluso la historia de su concepción de la lengua y de la literatura. Escasean, en cambio, los trabajos d…e cierta extensión sobre la poesía unamuniana. Del Cancionero particularmente puede decirse que es una de sus obras peor conocidas. En los últimos años se han publicado numerosos trabajos estilísticos sobre poetas españoles. Por eso sorprende más el descuido en que hasta ahora ha sido tenida esta obra importantísima. El joven hispanista Josse De Kock, profesor de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Gante y del «Hoger Instituut voor Vertalers en Tolken» del Rijksuniversitair Centrum de Amberes, ha querido con estos estudios introductorios colmar tan lamentable laguna. De Kock conoce y cita pasajes de Unamuno en que éste muestra su repugnancia a ser tratado por los hispanistas como «conejillo de Indias o rana de fisiólogo». Piensa, no obstante, que es imprescindible un análisis estilístico de la poesía unamuniana, por más que el propio poeta pretendiera destentenderse de los problemas formales o, al menos, subordinarlos a preocupaciones de fondo. Son precisamente aspectos formales los que aquí se estudian. El autor sabe que no puede hacerse el análisis formal del Cancionero sin conocer el pensamiento y los sentimientos desarrollados en él. Pero sabe igualmente que «familiarizarse con el vocabulario, la sintaxis, la retórica o las figuras estructurales puede facilitar, a su vez, la interpretación del fondo». Por eso nunca traza una separación artificial entre forma y contenido, sino que, siempre que le es posible, busca la relación entre ambos y su recíproca motivación. Sus estudios «van de lo más formal e incluso material a lo conceptual»; partiendo de la forma, desembocan natural y necesariamente en el contenido. J. De Kock resume así el propósito y el alcance de estos estudios: «Hemos tratado de inventariar, describir y explicar los principales medios formales empleados en la última recopilación poética de Unamuno. Nos hemos interrogado sobre el cómo y el porqué de la creación de cada uno de ellos, y asismismo sobre su valor.
