Keine große Veränderung in der Welt geschieht ohne Opfer. Und dieses Buch erzählt von den Opfern, die Neger und Weiße im Kampf um die Bürgerrechte gebracht haben. In vierzehn Fällen sind ? meist unbeachtet von der Weltöffentlichkeit ? Menschen Opfer des Rassismus geworden. Studenten, Hausfrauen, Laien und Pfarrer befanden sich ebenso unter ihnen wie die vier Kinder von Birmingham, unschuldige Opfer von Verbre- chern, die stolz auf ihre Zugehörigkeit zur ?weißen Rasse" waren. Jeder der Fälle ist von dem gleichen Geist des Fanatismus geprägt, und in jedem Falle waren die gleichen Kräfte am Werk, Kräfte, die von einer Gesellschaft getragen und geschützt werden, deren Engstirnigkeit und Arroganz einen verderblichen Einfluß auf die ganze Nation ausüben. Aber in all dem 'Unheil, von dem hier berichtet wird, begegnet dem Leser das Erwachen einer echten Humanität, einer Hoffnung auf Menschenwürde für alle. Der Autor will' durch die schlichte, eindrucksvolle Schilderung dieser Schicksale aufmerksam machen auf das, was in Amerika geschieht.
