Paperback. Condition: New. Combining his own experiences as an officer with documentary research at the National Archives, Kloman looks at the role of the Office of Strategic Services in World War II North Africa, Southern France, and Italy. Kloman explores the disparate backgrounds of those who volunteered to serve in the organization the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency as well as problems that arose in relations between its operational branches, interactions between the OSS and its British counterpart, and difficulties the OSS encountered in earning acceptance by US military commands. His narrative weaves accounts of behind-the-lines operations with broad views of the military campaigns they supported. An epilogue surveys developments in the intelligence field in the decades since.

Erasmus Kloman served in three OSS posts~Cairo, Algiers, and Caserta~winding up at age twenty~four with the title Acting Chief of Operations, OSS, MEDTO. After extensively researching documents in the National Archives, he presents his own story within the context of the OSS's role in North Africa, Southern France, and Italy. As the nation's first~ever foreign intelligence agency, the OSS was innovating on a tight time fuse, learning its way on the job. Inevitably, it made a number of fatal errors but scored impressive successes as well. Although today's Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) grew directly out of the OSS, this book is a forceful reminder of how much has changed in the world of intelligence over the past sixty years and how hard it is to draw lines connecting two very different eras. Kloman offers insights into OSS operations that could only be presented by an officer who served at the command level and oversaw critical decisions about where, when, and how those operations would be mounted. He examines the disparate backgrounds of those who volunteered to serve in the organization, the problems that arose in relations between the several operational branches, the interactions between the OSS and its British counterpart, Special Operations Executive (SOE), and the initial difficulty the OSS encountered in earning acceptance by U.S. military commands. The narrative interweaves detailed accounts of selected OSS behind~the~lines operations with broad views of the military campaigns they were supporting. Colorful descriptions and photographs from the author's scrapbook of life in these posts enliven the text. An epilogue surveys the six decades since the end of World War II and distills some of the salient developments in the intelligence field from the perspective of one who transferred from the OSS to the CIA. Kloman's summary points to the vast changes in the global geopolitical environment from the OSS era to the present.
