Ein Jahr nach seiner phänomenalen Malereischau in den Deichtorhallen in Hamburg 2009 und nachdem in der Albertina in Wien eine Ausstellung seiner Monotypien eröffnet worden ist, am Ende des Jahres 2010 also, muss sich Herbert Brandl einer Notoperation aufgrund e…ines akuten Aneurysmas unterziehen. »Den Spuren der Seziermesser am Körper folgten bald die Tatwaffen selbst, in Vitrinen und Schränken verwahrt, als ästhetisch-kulturelles Anschauungsmaterial; und Inspirationsware für seine folgenden Gemälde«, schreibt Florian Steininger in seinem Beitrag für dieses Buch. Es ist also nichts beim Alten geblieben, obwohl Herbert Brandl nach wie vor in unnachahmlicher Weise Berg- und Bildpanoramen, atemberaubende Nah- und Fernsichten ineinander verschmelzen lässt. Denn nach dem Gemetzel am eigenen Körper wurden die Berge blutiger, »die schneeweißen Felder und Hänge wurden befleckt mit den aktionistischen Spuren von Gewalt und Tod«. Wer denkt da nicht sofort an Uma Thurman in »Kill Bill«, die mit ihrem japanischen Langschwert O-Ren-Ishii richtet, sodass der Schnee sich blutrot färbt. Es gibt eine Installationsaufnahme in diesem kleinen querformatigen Band, wo die Faltungen der Klinge des Katana aus gehämmertem Stahl wie ein Gebirgspanorama scheinen, während schon in der verschwimmenden Fernsicht ein extrem in die Breite des Schwertes gezogenes Bergpanorama, das kein Oben oder Unten zu haben scheint, den Hintergrund bildet eindrücklicher könnten die Relationen des Abstrakten und Realen nicht aufscheinen. Der Rest in diesem neuen Werkansatz von Herbert Brandl geht noch tiefer in die Nahsicht, aus der einst coolen Geste der anti-emotionalen Haltung ist ein »regelrechter Angriff schroffer Markierungen auf das Bildgeviert, eine mannigfache Überlagerung ausladender Gesten« geworden, »die dem Werk eine schwindelerregende Bewegung verleihen«.
