Aceclofenac ist ein nichtsteroidales Antirheumatikum, das ein Phenylessigsäurederivat mit wirksamen entzündungshemmenden und schmerzstillenden Eigenschaften ist. Es ist ein selektiver COX-2-Hemmer, der hauptsächlich zur Linderung von Schmerzen und Entzündungen bei Osteoarthritis, rheumatoider Arthritis und Spondylitis ankylosans eingesetzt wird. Für Aceclofenac wurde die transdermale Verabreichung gewählt, um den First-Pass-Metabolismus in der Leber zu vermeiden, die Magen-Darm-Reizung aufgrund der sauren Natur des Arzneimittels zu überwinden und das Arzneimittel durch die transdermale Verabreichung an der Krankheitsstelle zu lokalisieren.
