Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Tom Kings personal memoirs range across a life of exceptional activity and interest. Aged nineteen, he found himself commanding a military company against Mau Mau terrorists in Kenya; at thirty he became the youngest ever general manager in a major printing and packaging group, in charge of a factory with a staff of 700 and dealing with nine different trade unions. Elected as an MP in 1970, nine years later he took through the legislation that transformed Londons vast derelict docklands into the thriving business district of Canary Wharf. Subsequently his five Secretary of State roles saw him carrying through the law that gave union members the right to a secret ballot before a strike, then facing IRA terrorism and Unionist opposition when he launched what became the start of the peace process, then watching the fall of the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain and being responsible for the massive UK deployment to help liberate Kuwait. Told with a sharp recollection of his fifty years in Parliament, Tom Kings memoirs cover a particularly interesting period of history and his part in shaping the events that led up to the world we live in now. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Green and white card wraps 15x21cm. 119pp. Wraps near fine. Interiors fine, with multiple associated signatures and inscriptions to the title page. Four years on from the invasion of Iraq, the Iraq Commission was formed to provide recommendations to the new British Government on the way forward. It addresses the present situation in terms of security, politics, economy, humanitarian assistance, Iraq's neighbours, the coalition, and international community. Recommendations cover on international action, UK military action, reconstruction, and humanitarian action. Appendices detail the workings of the Commission, its members, Secretariat, witnesses, submissions, remit, etc. It was chaired by Paddy Ashdown, Margaret Ann Jay, and Tom King. Its other members included Professor Brian Brivati, David Hannay, Rosemary Hollis, Paul Lever, Andrew Ridgway, Maeve Sherlock, Asim Siddiqui, Stephen Twigg, and Patrick Walker. Recognising that the issue remains deeply divisive and that not enough debate has focused on the aftermath, the Commission included individuals from both sides of the argument about the initial decision to go to war. This copy belonged to Rosemary Hollis (1952-2020), then Director of Research at Chatham House. In recognition of her contribution, the other Commissioners have signed the title page with brief messages of thanks. Some of the signatures are first names or initials only. Ridgway's is personalised: "Thank you Rosemary! x Andrew". Inscribed by Author(s).…
