Die Männer, die dort für ihr Vaterland gekämpft haben, traten bei der weiten Entfernun…g des Kriegsschauplatzes und der geringen Kenntnis, die man in Deutschland von jenen Gebieten hatte, nur wenig in Erscheinung.' Mit diesen Sätzen leitet Hans v. Kiesling, der letzte Generalstabsoffizier des Feldmarschalls von der Goltz seinen Bericht über den Einsatz deutscher Truppen im Ersten Weltkrieg in Nahen Osten ein. Ziel der deutschen Politik war es, britische Truppen im Verbund mit der Türkei, Persien und Afghanistan im Nahen Osten zu binden, um so die Westfront in Frankreich zu entlasten. Hierzu wurden ihm die von Deutschland und der Türkei nach Persien und Afghanistan entsandten Offiziere und Expeditionen, die deutschen und türkischen Militärattachés in Persien und die mit dem Titel Vizekonsul oder Konsulatsverweser eingesetzten Etappenoffiziere unterstellt. Von der Goltz verstarb am 19. April 1916 in seinem Hauptquartier in Bagdad an einer Typhusinfektion.In Deutschland sind die Einsätze deutscher Truppen im Irak und in Persien im Ersten Weltkrieg weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Mit diesem Buch soll dieses Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte wieder ins Bewusstsein gebracht werden. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt wird dabei auf die Iranpolitik und die militärischen Operationen im Iran gelegt.
