Der Vorrang wurde den Märchen gegeben, die in der Folklore der Nachbarvölker nur sporadisch oder überhaupt nicht vorkommen. Das litauische Märchenrepertoire umfaßt, wie bei dem in Europa zuletzt christianisierten Volk nicht anders zu erwarten, zahlreiche Elemente einer vorchristlichen Mythologie, andererseits aber auch einen besonders reichen Schatz an sozialkritischen Erzählungen. Da begegnet der altbaltische Gewittergott Perkunas oder der Teufel einem pfiffigen Dorfmusikanten, der arme dem reichen Bauern, der Gutsherr dem Knecht, doch nach Mühen und Gefahren siegt am Ende der einfache Mensch über alle ihn bedrohenden Mächte. Die aufgenommenen Texte stammen aus allen ethnographischen Regionen Litauens. Wir verdanken sie dem Sammeleifer litauischer und ausländischer Gelehrter, aber auch einfacher Bauern des 19. Jahrhunderts.
