Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In recent years, the samplers of the late 18th century and 19th century, worked by children mainly in cross stitch, have become collectable items and this book is a guide to making one's own. Jane Kendon sets out to show how to create samplers giving step-by-step guidance on all practical aspects, from the first stages of selecting fabrics, threads and needle, to learning the basic technique of cross stitch, which remains unchanged however elaborate the design. Advice is given on preparing to sew, working from a chart and counting threads and there are full instructions on finishing, stretching, mounting and framing the completed embroidery. Fifteen charted designs are provided of varying degrees of difficulty, together with notes for guidance, and there is advice on solving any problems that may arise. Simple calculations are covered and there is a "practice" design for the reader to complete. Finally a reference section with a wide range of ideas for alphabets, numbers, borders and motifs provides a source of inspiration. Jane Kendon is a professional designer of samplers and has exhibited her work. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting.
