Octavo, viii+80 pages, illustrated, original illustrated wrappers, tape repaired on spine and inside front hinge, otherwise a very good copy. The Bailie was a Scottish humorous journal established in 1872, running to 1926. It was a miscellaneous magazine containing items of local interest and articles about various topics. It focused largely on gossip and discussed people of interest both locally and throughout Scotland. A prominent section in its early years was a column about Men you Know, which featured information about prominent Scottish historical figures. The articles, which opened the publication, were accompanied by a black and white sketch of the figure being discussed. In 1890, Aird wrote that when the Bailie began, "some thought it not healthy, and predicted its early demise. It still lives on, apparently consitutionally strong, although at times it may not have a large per cent of the feast of reason and flow of soul". All articles were published without contributor names. Circulates largely in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the whole of Scotland. It was registered for transmission abroad. Archibald Macmillan wrote for the periodical frequently. His primary character, "Jeems Kaye" "was one of the most famous of the Glasgow-based vernacular columnists and featured prominently in the 'comic' paper The Bailie in the closing decades of the nineteenth century".
