Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. One of the most recognizable film themes ever written, 'The 3rd Man Theme' transformed Austrian zither player Anton Karas into an international sensation almost overnight. Featured throughout Carol Reed's noir masterpiece The Third Man, the haunting melody became an unexpected world…wide hit, reaching the top of international music charts and becoming inseparable from the film's shadowy postwar Vienna setting. This edition presents the Song Version, with lyrics by Walter Lord, adapted from Karas' original instrumental composition. The striking photographic cover features the film's principal stars Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and Orson Welles, together with the original movie advertising panel highlighting Graham Greene's screenplay and Carol Reed's direction, making this an especially desirable crossover collectible for both film and music enthusiasts. The film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and is consistently ranked among the greatest films ever produced. This example grades Very Good+. The cover retains exceptionally vibrant blue-and-black printing with only light handling wear, faint corner rubbing, and minor edge wear consistent with careful preservation. The interior music pages are bright, clean, and complete, with no writing, tears, or significant staining observed. The center fold remains secure, and the sheet displays beautifully overall, offering outstanding eye appeal for a frequently handled popular music publication. This is the original American Song Version issued in 1950, supported by the copyright statement: Copyright © 1949 & 1950 by British Lion Films Limited, London. The dual copyright reflects the original 1949 film release together with the 1950 publication of the vocal adaptation. The original 75¢ cover price, Chappell imprint, and contemporary rear advertisement for Richard Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto are all consistent with an early first American issue rather than a later reprint. Anton Karas (1906-1985) was an Austrian zither player whose career changed dramatically after director Carol Reed heard him performing in a Vienna wine tavern while scouting locations for The Third Man. Reed hired Karas to compose and perform the film's score, built almost entirely around solo zither. The resulting 'Third Man Theme' became an international bestseller, selling millions of records and forever associating Karas with one of cinema's most memorable musical themes. Walter Lord (1917-2002) was an American author and historian best known for A Night to Remember (1955), his classic account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Earlier in his career he occasionally contributed lyrics and adaptations for popular music, including this vocal version of 'The 3rd Man Theme.' He later became one of America's most respected narrative historians.
