Hardbound. First. Color pictorial boards, 192pp, profuse color and BW illustrations. Text is in Spanish and English. From the foreword--Julio Gonzalez is considered to be the father of iron sculpture and forged his style in a desire to incorporate space and time into his work, changing the meaning of iron, which he endowed with new constructive and expressive values, modelling volume, constructing space and welding the constructive elements together. The complexity of Gonzalez's personality and oeuvre, as in the best creators of the Spanish avant gardes, led him to maintain an essentially conflictive relationship between tradition and modernity, which is perhaps why it was so fruitful. This conflict between tradition and modernity affects him in every aspect, including the technical, because he was after all a craftsman trained to work in industry, where the hammer and the anvil were combined with autogenous welding. There is also a conflict between naturalism and abstraction or, in other words, between figuration and an analytico-conceptual approach. VG, bottom of boards has a dent on either board, as if dropped on an edge.
