Die vorliegende Sammlung historischer Textzeugen wurde erstmals im Jahr 1584 in Frankfurt von Reuber herausgegeben und gilt als dessen Hauptwerk. Neben dieser Ausgabe erschien 1726 eine weitere in der Bearbeitung durch den Historiker und Theologen Georg Christian Joannis, der den substantiellen Wert der Quellensammlung erkannt hatte. Georg Christian Joannis (1658-1735) hielt Reubers Sammlung alter Quellen, die zuerst 1584 erschienen war, für so wertvoll, daß er diese Neubearbeitung vornahm. Joannis hat sich vor allem durch sein dreibändiges Werk zur Mainzer Geschichte verdient gemacht. Bei einem Großbrand im Jahre 1726 sollen beim Frankfurter Verleger zahlreiche Exemplare der vorliegenden Auflage zerstört worden sein (so zumindest die 'Gelehrten Zeitungen' von 1726 sowie Fabricius, V, S. 258). Reuber studierte in Frankreich und Italien, war dann Advokat am Reichskammergericht in Speyer, bis er 1574 als Hofgerichtsrat in kurpfälzische Dienste trat. Johann Kasimir berief Reuber im Jahre 1587 zum kurpfälzischen Kanzler. In dieser Postion reformierte Reuber die Verwaltung des Kurfürstentums und legte so die Grundlage für den später erfolgreichen Territorialstaat.
