Add to basketCondition: Very Good. These medallions feature 19th-century Sèvres bisque porcelain portraits of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, crafted by designer Jules-Constant Peyre. Jules-Constant Peyre worked as a modeller at the Sèvres Manufactory from 1845 to 1848, later ascending to Chief Designer from 1856 to 1871. These pie…ces are made of biscuit de Sèvres (bisque porcelain), a matte, unglazed porcelain prized for its marble-like appearance, which allows fine portrait details to remain crisp and clear. Peyre also commercialized variations of this model in a synthetic material he patented called "ceramo-marble". The text visible in relief beneath the profiles reads "J. PEYRE F." (made by J. Peyre) paired alongside "E. DE NIEUWERKERKE DIR". Count Émilien de Nieuwerkerke was a famous sculptor and a high-ranking official who served as the Director-General of French Museums during Napoleon III's reign. Peyre originally sculpted the medallion of Empress Eugénie in 1855, basing it directly on a life-size marble bust created by Count de Nieuwerkerke. He subsequently completed the matching portrait of Emperor Napoleon III to form the imperial pairing. Identical variations of these Sèvres Manufactory medallions can be found today in prestigious museum collections worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The framing was done by The Artistic Framer / Camilla Richman Gallery, located locally at 843 Main St., Osterville, Massachusetts. It is a "Contemporary Style" frame made with 23K gold leaf. It uses a premium traditional technique called water gilded over red clay, with fully gilded sides. Red clay peeking through gives gold leafing a deep, warm luster over time. The label notes the use of Museum Glass. This is a top-tier anti-reflective glass that blocks up to 99% of harmful UV rays to prevent fading and makes the glass virtually invisible. There are a few blemishes on frame-see pictures.
