J. C. Bruhn (1868-1928) arbeitete seit 1890 als selbstständiger Fotograf. - Der Hamburger Kaufmann, Kunstsammler und Amateur-Fotograf E. W. Juhl (1850-1915) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Wegbereiter des Piktorialismus in Europa. "Juhl entstammte einer Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie, war wirtschaftlich unabhängig und setzte sich als Kurator, Ausstellungsorganisator, Redakteur der "Photographischen Rundschau", Autor und Juror bei internationalen Ausstellungen, aber auch als Sammler für die künstlerische Emanzipation der Fotografie ein. Seine zwischen 1893 und 1911 zusammengetragene Sammlung umfasste rund 800 Werke und gehörte somit zu den umfangreichsten privaten Piktorialismus-Kollektionen seiner Zeit. In Berlin waren Teile der Sammlung erstmals 1910 in einer Ausstellung im Königlichen Kunstgewerbemuseum zu sehen. Nach dem Tod von Ernst Juhl wurde seine Sammlung vom Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg und von der Bibliothek des Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseums, der heutigen Kunstbibliothek, angekauft. Weitere Teile des Nachlasses wurden im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört. Die Sammlung Juhl, die nun konservatorisch und wissenschaftlich erschlossen wurde, bildet zusammen mit der Sammlung Matthies-Masuren den Kernbestand der Kunstfotografie um 1900 in der Kunstbibliothek der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin" (C. Between 1908 and 1912, the Hamburg Senate along with Ernst Juhl collected 1000 photographs of the city and its surroundings, choosing 90 photographs from photographers A. Bruhn, Rudolf Dührkoop, Mrs. Diez-Dührkoop, Majo…r Böhmer, and O. Hofmeister for this publication, an edition limited to 300, this being number 215. These 90 stunning sepia collotypes are tipped in to imperial Japan paper with printed title, publication, and photographer's name and showcase Hamburg's harbor, farmhouses, sailors, fishermen, the working class, at times in traditional costume, and some neighboring lands. As Ernst Juhl states in his introduction: "The chosen pictures should bring to the stranger and the natives the beauties of the state and land area in front of their eyes and especially to the photographers, the lover as well as the expert, to offer suggestions for artistic undertakings." A truly stunning collection of collotypes, in excellent condition, forming a beautiful example of the era's pictorialist photography. 17 5/8" X 12 3/4". Text in German. 90 tipped in collotypes, plus half-title, title with tipped in collotype, preface, and list of collotypes. Edition limited to 300, this being number 215. Chipping and tears to edges and extremities of original printed dust jacket, with sunning and moderate soiling. Original portfolio halfbound in green cloth with green paper boards, with pictorial label collotype to upper board, lettered in gilt. Mild edgewear to portfolio, with sunning to upper and bottom edges both exterior and interior. Mild wear to interior hinges. Portfolio binding is sound. Some toning from portfolio to half-title, else fine. Collotypes are in fine condition, portfolio in very good + condition, and dust jacket in fair to good condition. This book is oversize and will require additional postage for international or priority orders.

Suggested by the Hamburg Senate a project under the d…irection of Ernst Juhl was initiated that produced a collection of more than 1,000 photographs of Hamburg and its surroundings. This publication is a selection of ninety of these photographs reproduced in collotype showing the beauty of the city and its neighboring environment, including the Lower Elbe from Hamburg though to its outlet into the North Sea. The majority of the photographs were taken by A. Bruhn, some by Rudolf Dührkoop, Mrs. Diéz-Dührkoop and one by Major Böhmer. The tipped-in photographs depict the cityscape of Hamburg with its impressive architecture, the harbor and the multitude of bridges and locks, fire departments, farm and fisher houses, and a great selection of Hamburger workers, fisherman and farmers in their traditional garbs. Contains one plate with complete listing of photographs with credits at front. All photographs with descriptive captions. Text in German.
