Memorial edition. Undated but 1874 according to the Preface. 10 pages of preliminaries, then 358 pages plus 14 of ads. The pagination convoluted or thorough, with letters and tracts separately paginated to the upper corner, then with helpful continuous pagination to the lower corner. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's patterned green cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and black, the boards are slightly rubbed, marked and bumped. The text block is slightly foxed, marked and age toned, with some cracking at points, the rear gutter has split, only a strip of the mull holding it together, and the front gutter is cracked. From the library of notable parapsychologist and paranormal investigator, Alan Gauld (1932-2024), with his small bookplate to the front pastedown, prior to that the property of notable book collector, George Oakley Fisher (1859-1933), with his armorial bookplate above Gauld's also to the front endpaper, and an intriguing earlier ink inscription to the front endpaper indicating that the book once belonged to a Mr. Kipps of the Middlesex Hospital.
