Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. DIKT OCH STUDIE. Minnesskrift utgiven af Ästetiska Föreningen i Uppsala med anledning af dess 40-åriga tillvaro. Uppsala: K. W. Appelbergs Boktryckeri, 1912. A particularly handsome example of early 20th-century Swedish bookbinding, bound and stamped by Gustaf Hedberg of Stockholm, Royal Court Bookbinder (Hofbokbindare), one of the foremost Swedish bookbinders of his period. The binding is authenticated by Hedberg's own binder's stamp impressed on the inside of the front board, reading "GUST. HEDBERG / HOFBOKBINDARE / STOCKHOLM" beneath a crowned emblem. Large octavo, approximately 28 × 19 cm. Finely executed brown half-leather binding with generously proportioned leather corners and striking hand-marbled paper over the boards. The rounded spine is divided by five raised bands into six compartments, with the title and commemorative publication information elegantly lettered in gilt. The binding is an accomplished piece of Swedish book craftsmanship. The warm brown leather is complemented by richly figured marbled paper in deep red, ochre, yellow and black. Particularly attractive multicoloured marbled endpapers in softer tones of red, green, yellow and grey complete the interior of the binding. The page edges are likewise decoratively marbled, creating a harmonious ensemble when the volume is closed. Of particular bibliographical importance, the original printed wrappers have been preserved and bound into the volume, allowing the original publication state to remain present within the superior bespoke binding. Published in 1912 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Ästetiska Föreningen i Uppsala (1872-1912). The volume contains literary, historical and art-historical contributions by a distinguished group of Swedish scholars and writers, including Ragnar Josephson, Torsten Fogelqvist, Martin Lamm, Karl Asplund, Hjalmar Lundgren, Anton Blanck, Erik Wettergren, Carl R. af Ugglas, Carl Gad and Oscar Wieselgren. The typography and page design are characteristic of the cultivated Swedish book arts of the period, with decorative initials, rubricated headings and carefully balanced typography adding considerably to the visual quality of the publication. Condition: Very good to near fine. A remarkably attractive and well-preserved binding. The leather remains rich and supple in appearance, the raised bands are well defined and the gilt spine lettering remains bright and clear. Some light rubbing and wear at the outer front joint and a few exposed edges and extremities, consistent with age and visible in the photographs. The marbled boards retain strong colour and visual impact. Internally very clean and fresh, with the binding firm and the text block sound. Ex libris/bookplate to the inside front board. Original printed wrappers bound in. The volume is especially desirable as an example of Swedish fine binding by Gustaf Hedberg, whose authorship of the binding is established by his Hofbokbindare stamp inside the front board. The combination of a documented Hedberg binding, elaborate marbling, raised-band gilt spine, preserved original wrappers and an important Uppsala cultural publication makes this an appealing object both bibliographically and as an example of Scandinavian book art. A highly decorative and finely crafted Swedish book — equally suitable for a collection of fine bindings, Scandinavian book arts, Swedish cultural history or simply as a distinguished library piece. Binding Contemporary fine half-leather binding by Gustaf Hedberg, Stockholm, Hofbokbindare (Royal Court Bookbinder), authenticated by his stamped binder's mark inside the front board. Five raised bands, gilt spine lettering, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and decorated edges. Original printed wrappers bound in.
