Joseph Gregor Lang, nato nel 1755 e deceduto nel 1834, è stato un notevole geografo, cartografo e esploratore tedesco del XVIII e XIX secolo, conosciuto principalmente per i suoi contributi alla geografia fluviale e alle esplorazioni sul fiume Reno. Nato a Monaco di Baviera, Lang dimostrò fin da giovane un vivo interesse per la geografia e l'esplorazione. Studiò presso l'Università di Monaco, dove approfondì la sua conoscenza delle scienze naturali e acquisì competenze cartografiche. Dopo gli studi universitari, intraprese diverse spedizioni scientifiche, focalizzandosi in particolare sulla navigazione fluviale. Il suo lavoro più significativo, "Reise auf dem Rhein" (Viaggio sul Reno), pubblicato nel 1802, documenta una delle sue spedizioni più importanti lungo il fiume Reno.
