Early in Dr. Brierly's career as a mathematician doing operations research for the US Department of Defense the author acquired an interest in investigating ways to optimize winning games of chance. He recognized that every gambling game offers a potential for applying probability and statistics to optimize bets. After several years the author developed a computer system that essentially simulated a horse race based on race program data. As part of his graduate level mathematics program he took many advanced courses in the theory of probability and statistics. In his professional career as a mathematician working for the US Army he mastered computer systems design. Interest in applying mathematics to games of chance became a hobby that led naturally to developing computer algorithms for optimizing ways to make money at the harness race tracks. He succeeded in making profits every year for over 20 years at a number of harness race tracks using the simulation and expert systems that he designed.
