Paperback. Condition: New. The Inca Empire (c. 1400-1532) was the largest Indigenous state to develop in the Americas, spanning the extraordinarily rich landscapes of the central Andes. Scholarly approaches to Inca-era economies initially drew on Spanish colonial documents that emphasized royal resource monopolies, labor tribute, and kin-based land tenure. Anthropologists in recent decades have emphasized local economic self-sufficiency and the role of reciprocity in Inca economics. This Element adds to the existing literature by reviewing recent archaeological research in the Inca capital region and different provinces. The material evidence and documents indicate considerable variation in the development and implementation of Inca political economy, reflecting an array of local economic practices that were tailored to different Andean environments. Although Inca economic development downplayed interregional trade, emerging evidence indicates the existence of more specialized trading practices in Inca peripheral regions, some of which persisted under imperial rule.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2018 Common Ground Publishing hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. Through case studies reflecting the experiences of teachers and students, The Mindful Eye explores the ways in which contemplative approaches can incorporate mindfulness and embodiment practices in visual arts higher education. Currently discussed as a promising complementary vision, contemplative pedagogies are increasingly introduced across a wide range of disciplinary practices in higher education with well-demonstrated positive impacts on students' academic performance, creativity, stress management, and sense of wellbeing. Significantly, however, ways of knowing and being that privilege attention, stillness, and an awareness of interior states have particular resonances for art and design practitioners, where the compassionate engagement that can emerge from the practice has radically transformative possibilities. Visual practices appear to be particularly conducive to encouraging "mindful ways of seeing" that integrate individual concerns and social realities, inspiring alternative visions of a more sustainable future. The case studies in this book provide a critical guide to incorporating contemplative practices across a range of teaching and learning contexts, from the practice-based studio to the classroom, lecture theater, and field excursion. Alive to the pedagogical and professional challenges of incorporating non-traditional forms of enquiry into the art and design curriculum, the book draws on the lived experiences of teachers and graduates to constitute a compendium of evidence-based approaches for a transformative education grounded in contemplative pedagogies. Covering a range of visual practices, the 13 chapters are grouped into four sections, respectively entitled Moving Images, Embodied Practices, Creative Expressions, and Contemplative Designs. Contents: Curators' Essay Introductory Essay The Mindful Eye: Contemplative Pedagogies in the Visual Arts by Michael Garbutt and Nico Roenpagel Section 1: Moving Images Seeing Mindfully: Fostering Creativity and Connection through Contemplative Photography by Libby Falk Jones The Art of Image: Seeing the Way Home by Cindy Shearer Ground, Path, Fruition: Engaging Students' Creativity by Doreen Bartoni Section 2: Embodied Practices Embodied Drawing: The Physiology of Drawing, Experiential Anatomy and Contemplative Practice by Jane Brucker Engaging in Contemplative Practices to Cultivate Confidence in the Pre-Service Visual Art Classroom by Stephanie Baer, Stephanie Danker, Suzanne Klatt, and Brendan Danker Communal Dreaming: Enlarging the Space of the Possible through a Postmodern Curriculum of Nap-Ins by Barbara Bickel, Nane Jordan, Ingrid Rose, Medwyn McConachy, and Cindy Lou Griffith Section 3: Creative Expressions Incorporating Mindfulness, Taoist Philosophy, and Meaning-Making into Visual Art Teaching to Promote Contemplative Skills for Enhanced Student Growth and Development by Michael Hieber Opening the Contemplative Mind through Art by Jane E.
