XX [From the introduction] "Woven fabrics have a known history stretching back over thousands of years. The earliest textile production was undoubtedly functional, and fabrics were woven to serve practical ends. However, the medium is supple and seems to have offered a means of aesthetic expression since early times. After centuries of experimentation, we are left today with a broad range of textile techniques limited only by the inherent nature of the weaving process and the variety of raw materials. As a result, there has developed an almost endless array of textile variations: some very simple, others greatly elaborated. Of these latter, the textiles of native Guatemala hold interest to scholar and layman alike; They are strikingly colorful and show a remarkable range of design technique. In undertaking the production of this catalog, the Heard Museum has a threefold objective in mind: to provide a visual description of modern Guatemalan costumes; to provide a technical analysis of their construction; and to present a general overview of the Guatemalan people. For it is only through viewing the cultural milieu in which these garments developed that we can begin to have an understanding of their present-day distribution. In some respects, the costumes of Guatemala can be viewed as a statement of group identity. Design motif, color choice and garment form are slow to change and can identify the village in which a piece was made. The textiles can also be viewed as statements of personal expression, for no two are exactly alike. In order to distinguish between these two, cultural and idiosyncratic features, it is essential to know something of the people who made the costumes and their way of life.
