Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the winter diets of elk and deer in the Blue Mountains of Oregon, comparing their consumption patterns to determine the level of interspecies competition. Conducted in the 1973-74 winter season, the study's findings conclude that competition is minimal despite th…e harsh conditions. Shrubs are less important to elk and deer in these particular mountain ranges than in other similar regions. It is noted that Idaho fescue is a favored food source for both species. The author's analysis reveals that while elk and deer share some dietary overlap, the availability of preferred forage is sufficient to prevent significant competition. This book provides valuable insights into the comparative winter diets of elk and deer in a specific geographic region, contributing to the understanding of wildlife management and ecosystem dynamics in mountain environments. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the seasonal changes in the forage quality of native plants on the Blue Mountains summer range of eastern Oregon and Washington. The author examines crude protein and phosphorus levels of six key species over four grazing seasons to determine which plants are most nu…tritious and when different plant communities should be grazed. The study builds upon previous research on nutrient content, weight gain, and palatability, highlighting quality gaps in the summer-long forage supply. The book contextualizes these findings within the broader history and literature of range plant studies, analyzing how yearly and seasonal variation in forage quality can be used to optimize grazing practices and animal health. The author concludes that understanding these fluctuations is crucial for improving range management and ensuring the well-being of livestock and wildlife that depend on these grasslands. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Colored pictorial wrappers. Signed by both authors. Notes, dedication, acknowledgement, contents, prologue, epilogue, bibliography, index. John Hawk was considered by many to be the surliest, most unpleasant man they?d ever met. He'd boldly gone deep into Nez Perce tribal lands, staked a claim and started ranching… on Prairie Creek. Rumors that Hawk was rustling cattle started fairly quickly. His father-in-law, along with several other neighbors, went so far as to file theft charges against Hawk in 1877. Hawk was acquitted of all charges in that case, but most other cattlemen in the area didn't for a minute believe he was innocent. After the trial, hostility toward Hawk became open and blatant, and he responded in kind. Hawk could have reassured the cattlemen that he was not, in fact, a rustler, but this he refused to do, apparently on the theory that he shouldn't have to. That stubbornness would eventually kill him. On a cold, clear, moonlit night by the Lostine River in 1881, while asleep in his bedroll, John Hawk, who was only 31 years old, was shot dead by a group of vigilantes. Creasing to page corners else very good.
