Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Tropical alpine ecosystems are unique and important areas that serve vital roles in the areas of hydrology, biodiversity and carbon storage, due to their unique set of climatic and topographic conditions. These areas are particularly vulnerable to climate change and fire as they exist in a fragile balance. Mount Kenya is one such area and it has experienced many fires over the past few years. This book explores the role of fire on the mountain and the impacts on soil properties. Satellite imagery is used to characterize the fire regime over the past 15 years, according to frequency and severity, and also to explore patterns of burning. The book examines the role of fire severity and other geographic properties in determining soil properties. This study is useful for park managers in their efforts to manage the Mount Kenya National Park, and also for those interested in global climate change and it's impact on these unique mountain ecosystems. …

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The research aimed at determining the changes of habitat in ANP, Oryx population trend, habitat selection and delineation of its suitable habitat. Vegetation change detection in ANP was done by using remote sensing and GIS applications. Four habitat categories were used for habitat selections which include vegetation type, ground cover, slope and distance from water. The trends of Oryx population and vegetation change including other factors were correlated. The result of vegetation change has showed that there is a significant change in most vegetation types. Grassland and wooded grassland with short grass cover in flat slopes between 3 6kms away from water is the most preferred habitat for Oryx in ANP. Oryx population has significantly declined between the years 1966 to 2011 and its range has highly decreased. Based on habitat suitability analysis, the current available habitat for Oryx can be substantially increased by interventions of different alternatives. It was recommended that, proper habitat management and sufficient protection are required to maintain the declining Oryx population and grassland habitats.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Wildlife Law Enforcement plays a vital role in the conservation of biological diversity by ensuring that plant and animal species are protected. Although South Sudan has a Wildlife Act, it does not have a Wildlife policy to assist in the enforcement of existing laws. Hence, the country has witnessed an escalation in crime targeting biological resources that has led to decline and extinction of some species. This study was conducted in Badingilo National Park (BNP) in South Sudan with the following objectives: 1) identify the challenges facing wildlife law enforcement; 2) determine the causes and effects of the challenges faced in enforcing wildlife laws; and 3) come up with interventions to mitigate effects of challenges of wildlife law enforcement in BNP. Implementation of these interventions will enhance wildlife law enforcement and promote biodiversity conservation not only in BNP but also in other protected areas facing the same challenges in South Sudan.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Evaluation of habitat and population is a prerequisite for formulating effective habitat management and population recovery interventions for sustainable conservation of endangered species. Mapping using GIS techniques and Landsat imageries is an effective method for habitat evaluation whilst modelling offers a powerful tool for understanding the species-habitat relationships and population dynamics. This book provides interventions for saving Kenya s roan antelope from extinction. It specifically answers six research questions: 1) what factors are threatening roan and other antelope populations in Ruma National Park (RNP) and how can these threats be mitigated ; 2) what sampling protocols and analytical methods are cost-effective and accurate for monitoring the roan s movement and distribution patterns; 3) what features characterize a suitable habitat for the roan in different seasons ; 4) which are the most effective and accurate techniques for analyzing roan habitat selection; 5) what are the most cost-effective management interventions for roan population recovery ; and 6) what factors influence the distribution of snares in RNP and how can poaching via snares be mitigated 284 pp. Englisch.…
