With the bookplates of John A. Fairley; in vol. i the ownership signature of John Collins, tipped into vol. ii the compliments slip of Miss Mary C. Tocher (Mary Crockert Tocher, 1865-1941), Aberdeen. The bibliography was commissioned from Alexander Webster Robertson, Librarian of the Aberdeen Public Library, in 1886, when the New Spalding Club was founded; 10 years later James Fowler Kellas Johnstone was co-opted to help. After Robertson died in 1911, Johnstone soldiered on as sole editor, and the Third Spalding Club (formed June 1928) committed itself to publication; but Johnstone, who died in September 1928, never saw the books through the press. John Alexander Fairley (1862-1949), bibliographer, worked in the Scottish prison service; the National Library of Scotland holds letters to him about Johnstone, from Alexander Carlyle and David Hay Fleming, 1924-9.…
