Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Very Good Minus. Thirteenth edition. Hard cover, 16mo, (3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches) in half green calf over marble paper-covered boards, grey end papers, letterpress printed by H. Bryer, Printer, Bridge-Street, Blackfriars, upon laid paper, with a frontispiece engraving of "Britannia supported by Liberty and Commerce receiving the produce of various parts of the World." "The engraving published 1800 by E. Newbery, Corner of St. Paul's." xii, 250pp.** Condition: Very Good Minus. Boards a bit rubbed and spine label as well. An inch long split to head of outer joint. Hinges in order. Pages lightly foxed. Covers moderately worn at tips through to boards. Front free endpaper has dog-ear fold (production fault). Generally clean interior pages. **A brief history of England, organized by small chapters by reigns of the English monarchs, beginning with William I (the Conquerer) 1028-1087 through the reign of King George III (1760 - 1820). The latter part of the book is interesting in that it outlines the events leading up to war with the Spanish and French, including the Battle of Trafalgar, (which occurred during the year of this publication.) Different updated versions were offered from the 1770's of this pocket edition. **The printer of the engraving, Elizabeth (Bryant) Newbery, was a woman publisher and bookseller (1745-1821) who like others of the central London printing fraternity, was located in the district around St. Paul's Cathedral. She ran the business, inherited from her husband, successfully for more than twenty years, pioneering books for young English children. She sold the business to John Harris, mentioned as publisher here, in 1802. Worldcat on E. Newbery. OCLC 29931886 says the Rev. Mr. Cooper was a name de plume for a "hack" author, Richard Johnson, active from around 1785. UPDATE: Through totally unexpected intercession of "The Book Gods," which fellow travellers in the bibliophilic vein will be aware, a clipping mentioning the husband of publisher and bookstore owner Elizabeth Newbery literally fell into this bookseller's hands today, and so this tidbit from the June 4th, 1881 edition of "The Athenaeum" will be included with your purchase. Thirteenth Edition, "Carefully Revised and Corrected". E. Newbury (engraving) (illustrator). Book.…

Add to basketNew edition. 338pp. With an engraved frontispiece. Original publisher's green roan-backed marbled paper boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. Heavily rubbed. Book-label of the Dublin Juvenile Library to FEP, early ownership inscriptions of John McKenney to FFEP and head of title, frontispiece partially traced over, pen-trials to terminal page, scattered spotting. An apparently unrecorded Irish edition of an immensely popular introduction to English history via the most influential of her monarchs. First published by F. Newbery in 1775, the work reached 11 editions by the turn of the century. The book is commonly attributed to hack-writer and compiler of numerous Newbery publications, Richard Johnson (1733/34-1793), whose name is frequently connected with the alias of the Reverend Mr. Cooper; however, his contribution has been called in the question by recent scholarship, with Roscoe (with reference to Weedonâs Richard Johnson and the Successors to John Newbery) going so far as to doubt his involvement entirely. The Dublin Juvenile Library was established at 43 Lower Sackville Street sometime around 1796. cf. Roscoe J84. Size: 12mo.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Lot of 40 titles from the Arno / New York Times Series The American Negro, His History and his literature. HEAVY Package - pickup can be arranged at our public storefront in downtown Manhattan. All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning. Uncommon to find so many in one place. Shipping will be extra ! pickup available in NYC. RARE CATSKILL NEW YORK IMPRINT.Although for many years attributed to the Reverend William Cooper [see Howes C-761], modern scholarship has identified the author as being Richard Johnson, (1733 or 1734-1793), He wrote the text for Elizabeth Newbery, who published the first edition in 1789. [M.J.P. Weedon, "Richard Johnson and the Successors to John Newbery," The Library (1949), pp. 25-63]. Richard Johnson also wrote an adaptation for children of several stories of the "Thousand and one nights" under the pseudonym Reverend J. Cooper. It appeared under the title "The Oriental moralist, or the beauties of the Arabian nights entertainments", accompanied with suitable reflections adapted to each story in 1790.Mackay Croswell, (1765-1847), was an important early printer in the Hudson Valley who started the first Catskill New York newspaper, "The Catskill Packet", in 1792. Together with his brother Thomas he opened a book and print shop in Catskill in 1790. Mackay was soon joined in the the business of journalism by his brother Harry Croswell. In 1800, the paper was renamed "The Western Constellation" in 1800 and was co-edited by Mackay and Harry. For a brief period, the brothers mentored a well-known future journalist, Thurlow Weed who worked in their print shop.…
