New York Metropolitan Museum of Art 1955 Bound, decorative canvas, no jacket, 80pp., 19,5x26cm., richly illustr. in b/w., in good condition (binding and spine with some traces of use and somewhat discolorated, a small piece of tape on the front- and backside, ex-libris on first page, inside book in very good condition). The book is richly illustrated with fifteenth-century wooducts. John of Hildesheim's wonder-filled account of the Christmas story and the adventure of the three Kings. He was the first to gather the many legends and traditions surrounding the medieval saints, Balthasar, Melchior and Jaspar into one book. Miss Freeman used a Middle English text of 1399 as her primary source. The illustrations are from a copy of the Strassburg edition, generally dated 1484.
