Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Groth, John (illustrator). 1st Edition. Light wear to edges, otherwise fine. 'It is the 1920s: The buffalo are long gone from the plains, the Comanche long vanquished. Only the old remember. An aging Comanche named Starlight and eight members of his tribe come from Oklahoma to the Texas ranch of Tom Bird. They demand the largest of his buffalo, which they hope to kill in the traditional way of their people. The old rancher finally concedes. Filled with remembrances of old raids, narrow escapes, and bold blood now gone, this timeless story brings to life the tensions between justice and regret, mourning and reawakening.'.

hardcover. Dust Jacket Condition: dj. John Groth (illustrator). First edition. Small 4to. An old Comanche named Starlight comes from Oklahoma to Texas with eight patriots and demands of old Tom Bird the largest of his buffalo, which the indians eventually kill, in less than graceful manner, and then head home. Such is the bare frame of this remarkable story, filled with remembranes of old raids, narrow escapes, days of intense confrontation and bold blood, now gone. "It is a classic in its idea," says A. C. Greene, "and an artistic masterwork in its fulfillment." The text is handsomely illustrated with drawings by the late John Groth. 59 pages. A fine copy in cloth and boards in a nearly fine dust jacket.
