Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The scarce First Edition of a collection of poetry by the prominent Welsh working-class writer and "miner poet" Mogg Williams. Born David Morgan Williams in Ogmore Vale in 1928, he left school at the age of 14 and followed the traditional route of the times by working underground. A… pit accident forced him to leave the mines after some 20 years and he took to writing, quickly becoming a highly respected cultural figure across the South Wales Valleys. Though rather than seeking mainstream commercial success, he famously read his poetry in workingmen's clubs and pubs, his writing capturing the comradeship, and intense political struggle of the mining communities. During the historic 1984-85 Miners' strike, Williams gave inspirational readings that provided immense emotional relief and solidarity to the striking pickets, his raw, unapologetic, and highly political style often alienating the mainstream literary elite his work was famously frowned upon by what peers called the "stiff necks" of the Welsh cultural establishment. Because mainstream academic institutions, poetry journals, and major publishers largely ignored him, his works were rarely preserved in standard literary anthologies or kept in print by commercial houses. The current scarcity and rarity of Mogg Williams's published work—such as Selected Works 1969-1996—stems from a combination of deliberate distribution choices, clashes with mainstream culture, and the nature of indie publishing. Williams did not write for profit or mainstream literary fame. He independently published much of his work and frequently gave away the proceeds to charitable causes and community funds designed to support struggling mining families, and his books printed in limited, small-batch quantities rather than mass-market print runs. Following his death in January 1997, no central literary estate stepped in to digitize his catalog, rendering his work largely ephemeral outside of specialized Welsh heritage libraries. He remains a symbol of working-class defiance, famously declaring that the miners "belong to history".
