Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a critical analysis of using early Christian writings, often called "the Fathers," to resolve present-day religious disputes. The author contends that relying on these ancient texts presents significant challenges due to their scarcity, particularly from the cruci…al first few centuries of Christianity. The book argues that the existing writings from this period primarily address concerns far removed from contemporary theological debates. The author highlights the abundance of forged or misattributed works, creating confusion and skepticism about the authenticity of many texts. Furthermore, the book emphasizes the difficulty of comprehending the Fathers' intended meanings due to language barriers, evolving terminology, and the complex writing styles prevalent in their era. The author raises concerns about the consistency of the Fathers' views, noting instances where they appear to contradict themselves or change their stances over time. Ultimately, this book underscores the complexities and limitations of using the Fathers as definitive authorities in resolving modern religious controversies. It encourages a cautious and discerning approach when engaging with these ancient texts, recognizing their historical context and the challenges inherent in interpreting their intended meanings. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Jean Daillé (1594 - 1670) was a French Huguenot minister and Biblical commentator. His works include the treatise Du vrai emploi des Pères (1631), translated into English by a Thomas Smith under the title A Treatise concerning the right use of the Fathers (1651). The work attacks those who made the authority of the Church Fathers conclusive on matters of faith and practice. Daillé contends that the text of the Fathers is often corrupt, and even when it is correct, the reasoning is often illogical. He argued that all the Ignatian epistles were spurious, and he was contradicted by John Pearson. In his massive Sermons on the Philippians and Colossians, Daillé made his claim to rank as a preacher. He wrote also Apologie pour les Eglises Réformes and La foi fondée sur les Saintes Écritures. His life was written by his son Adrien, who retired to Zürich at the revocation of the edict of Nantes. Daille interprets the Colossian epistle of Paul of Tarsus in XLIX Sermons Upon the Whole Epistle of the Apostle St. Paul to the Colossians. First Edition in English. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1651 Church Fathers 1ed Right Use by Huguenot Daille ENGLISH London Provenance Jean Daille was a 17th-century Huguenot minister known for his numerous sermons. It was, however, his 'Treatise Concerning the Right Use of the Fathers' that brought him beyond sermons into ecclesiastical…literature. In this work, Daille attacked the authority given to Church Fathers as it concerns faith and faith practices. According to Chisholm, Daille notes that the ancient fathers were often corrupt, and their views were biased and unethical. This 1651 first English edition of "Right Use of the Fathers" was translated out of the original 1631 French by Thomas Smith and published in London. Item number: #26111 Price: $950 DAILLE, John A treatise concerning the right use of the fathers in the decision of the controversies that are at this day in religion London: printed for John Martin, 1651. First English edition. Details: Collation: Complete with all pages o [14], 163, [1], 195, [1] References: Hugh Chisholm, "Jean Daille" in Encyclopedia Britannica; Provenance: Handwritten Fran. Wythens o Sir Francis Wythens (c. 16351704) was a British judge and politician. He was elected to Parliament for Westminster in September 1679, though sources suggest this was achieved illegally. This did not slow his career, as he was rewarded with a knighthood in 1680 and promotion to King's Counsel; he was made a Serjeant-at-Law in 1683, and became a Justice of the King's Bench. He took part in many high-profile trials, such as the prosecution of the Rye House Plotters, the conviction of Titus Oates, and sat on the court which condemned Algernon Sidney to death for treason. He was dismissed as a Justice in April 1687, apparently for refusing to institute martial law in peacetime, a move that has been remembered as one of James II's greatest missteps.
