Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good-Very Good. N C Wyeth (DJ), J Allen St John (chapter headings) (illustrator). Reprint. An early printing of the first G&D reprint of the 1st Tarzan novel. The publication date is estimated but most likely 1929. There is no top stain to the text block & a closed ampersand in G&D at the bottom of the spine & an ad in the rear with 28 ERB titles. The DJ is from 1929 with a synopsis of the book on the front flap, a square picture of ERB at the upper left of the rear panel with a list of 28 ERB titles below, and a list of 25 ERB titles on the reverse. The DJ illustration is by N C Wyeth. The chapter heading illustrations are by J Allen St John. The book is in very good shape with bright red boards and sharp black lettering. The DJ illustration is clean and sharp with some light rubbing to the front panel. There is light edge wear with small loss a the top & bottom of the spine. There is a thumbnail sized sticker scrape at the bottom left of the front panel. A good to very good copy of an early Tarzan reprint.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xix, (1) ,655, (1) pgs, 2 plans, plates, portraits, double-page plan, facsimiles. Rebound in red cloth. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers lightly faded on spine and cover, minor. soiling. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Wyeth's memoir of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest is a valuable and unusually interesting account. Written in an engaging style, his narrative is full and clear. John Allan Wyeth was born on May 26, 1845, in Guntersville, Alabama. He attended La Grange Military Academy, a defunct military academy in Colbert County, Alabama, from the age of 15 to 17. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate States Army. He participated in Morgan's Raid and rode under Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan, from 1862 to 1863. He joined the 4th Regiment Alabama Cavalry under General Joseph Wheeler and served in the Battle of Chickamauga of 1863. He was captured by Union forces and jailed at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. He was incarcerated for a total of 16 months. In February 1865 he was part of a prisoner exchange and returned to Confederate agents in Virginia. REFERENCE: DORN II 2738; NEVINS II pg. 103: "Written by a Confederate veteran who served under Forrest, this detailed and uncritical study is concerned almost entirely with military operations." EICHER #220: "Wyeth provides one of the more interesting turn-of-the-century works of Confederate biography. The author's wartime experience as a young trooper of the 4th Alabama Cavalry invents this work with its strengths and weaknesses. Despite Wyeth's hero worship, the work contains much of value. For instance, the author establishes a logical argument supporting the contention that Forrest was perhaps the only Confederate commander thinking clearly at Fort Donelson.".
