The second part of the celebrated series "Theatrum Europaeum"; the 2nd edition (1637); this part was written by Johann Philipp Abelin (1600-1634) and Johann flittner. Abelin's parts (1 and 2) are considered the best although these books are especially famous for their copper engravings by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650). This copy contains no large plates and maps (60 engravings are listed in the book), only the frontispiece and (all) 50 copper engravings in the text (mostly portraits of rulers or commanders, but also battle scenes etc.). Follwing the success of Sebastian Brant's 1494 Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools), the genre of highly erudite -- essentially sophisticated schoolboy -- satire flourished in Germany. As the Reformation blossomed in the 1510s and 1520s, these took on an even more pointedly religious bent, becoming essentially theological treatises disguised as lampoons. Thomas Murner's (1475-1537) 1512 Schelmenzunft (Rascals' Guild) was among the most popular of these successors. Thirty-three brief poems, each with an accompanying plate, skewer people from every class and walk of life, saving the sharpest barbs, naturally, for scholars, lawyers and divines. Whereas Erasmus's Praise of Folly (Moriae Encomium) originated in Latin, and Brant's satire was promptly translated as the Stultifera navis in 1497, Murner's work remained available only to German-speakers until 1620, when Johannes Flittner, a Frank (Frankfurter?) and a poet laureate of the Holy Roman Empire, translated it into Nebulo nebulonum (in full: Rascal of rascals; that is, a serio-comic judgment on modern profligacy; in which the frauds, deceits and subtleties of villainous men are publicly exposed to the air and adorned by means of illustration: in iambic dimeter verse by Johann Flitner, a Frank, Poet Laureate). The Belgian binder Charles de Samblanx and the gilder Jacques Weckesser worked together from 1889-1909, making some of the very finest turn-of-the-century bindings. Irvin G. First edition of the Latin versification of Thomas Murner's ruthless satire Der Schelmen Zunft ('The League of Rogues'), published in 1512. Not to be confused with the contemporary Evangelic pastor and prominent hymn-writer, Johann Flittner was born in Schleusingen, became 'Gerichts-Procurator' in Frankfurt, and was appointed poet laureate of the Holy Roman Empire around 1620. This Latin translation after Murner the early sixteenth-century master of satiric pamphlets who penned, i.a., a harsh parody of Luther was Flittner's most relevant and successful achievement. It consists of a series of 33 erudite jokes in the form of illustrated verses against personal vice. Everything is taken and represented in its literal meaning, creating some funny emblems like the one depicting strict censors as people who 'go around sifting excrement.' Very fittingly, the work opens with a dedicatory epigram to Momus, the Greek god of mockery, which illustrates the meaning of the title ('Rascal of Rascals: A Teasing Reproach of Contemporary Idleness').
