Pasión clásica, estudia la figura del gran pintor Joaquín Torres García (1874-1949) desde su llegada a Cataluña a finales del siglo XIX hasta su definitiva marcha de España en 1927. Hijo de padre catalán y madre uruguaya, Torres García participó activamente en la vida bohemia de la Barcelona de f…in de siglo, la misma que vivió Pablo Picasso, para a partir de ella adentrarse en los caminos del arte de la vanguardia. Pero a diferencia de Picasso, cuyo vanguardismo se gestó en París, el de Torres García lo hizo a la sombra de la recuperación mediterranista catalana que a principios del siglo XX intentó sepultar las novedades modernistas, recuperación que tuyo su garante teórico en el controvertido Eugeni D¿Ors. Las relaciones de Torres García con Eugeni D¿Ors y sus correligionarios, con el emergente nacionalismo catalán del momento y con el movimiento noucentiste, relaciones que le llevaron a ser elegido para pintar el salón más emblemático de Cataluña, el Salón de San Jorge del Palau de la Generalitat en Barcelona, constituyen la trama histórica del libro. Una trama que se rompe cuando a Torres García, tras la muerte de su máximo valedor, Enric Prat de la Riba, primer presidente de la Mancomunitat de Catalunya, se le prohíbe continuar su trabajo en el Salón de San Jorge, una de las grandes obras murales del arte español del siglo XX, en la que la pasión por lo clásico de su autor alienta, paradójicamente, un vanguardismo contrario a los presupuestos de partida del noucentisme. A través de un pormenorizado estudio de las pinturas y escritos, del Torres García de esta época, del que por primera vez se publica en castellano Notas sobre Arte, el libro descubre, pues, la figura del Torres García vanguardista antes de su exilio de España que le llevará a instalarse en París, Nueva York y, finalmente, Montevideo, su ciudad natal, y a ser reconocido, por su universalismo constructivo, como una de las grandes figuras del arte internacional de la primera mitad de.
