The manometer consists of five U-tubes connected in series, with mercury, alcohol, and water used at different times to transmit pressure from one U-tube to the next. The piston gauges consist of a hardened steel piston and cylinder mounted vertically in a cast-iron base. The gauges were first calibrated against the mercury manometer and then used as secondary instruments to measure pressures up to 100 bars.
