I give them examples in the book of when we first moved to Hong Kong, and was telling one of my neighbors, "The trash can is just past the elevator across from my apartment." An eyebrow was raised, and I then had to point and smile to get my point across. What I should have said was, "The rubbish bin is just past the lift across from my flat." That's right, rubbish = trash, bin = can, lift = elevator and flat = apartment. How did our languages become so different? Also I reflect on our time in London, England when we moved into our new home, and our landlord said he wanted to show me the old geyser (pronounced "geezer") he kept in the utility closet. WHAT!! I was very relieved to see he didn't have some old guy tied up and held captive in his closet. rather he was showing me his hot water tank. This book is a smart, new way to look at how we can get into some awkward situations, as words we are using in America may have a totally different meaning in different cultures. I think this will make a great travel guide as Americans travel the globe, and I think it is funny and informative too. When it comes to my writing background, I majored in Journalism at the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. When I graduated from school I became a copywriter at the daily newspaper in Columbus, Ohio (called The Columbus Dispatch). I wrote radio, and TV ads to promote the paper to prospective readers, and wrote pamphlets as well as newspaper ads to attract prospective advertisers for the 5 years I worked for The Dispatch.
