Il publia ensuite « Le Divin et Dieu », un article extrait d'une étude que sa mort en 1960 l'empêcha d'achever. Les nombreuses pages retrouvées furent publiées sous le titre « Le Désir de Dieu », préfacées par Paul Ricur. C'est cette uvre importante qui est publiée à nouveau aujourd'hui. Fondée sur une affirmation « qui s'affirme en moi, par moi, sans être de moi », la recherche de Nabert a porté principalement sur trois domaines : une critique résolue de l'ontothéologie (à l'absolu comme être, Nabert oppose l'absolu comme acte) ; une « critériologie du divin » ; une « herméneutique de l'absolu » (une philosophie de l'expérience de foi appuyée à la fois sur le désir d'être et sur l'ouverture au témoignage absolu).
