Hoe boeiend en afwisselend een loopbaan bij een multinational kan verlopen, hoeveel kansen tot ontplooiing er zijn. Daarnaast biedt hij inzicht in de complexe besluitvormingsprocessen van een wereldwijd opererend concern. Hij beschrijft hoe het Angelsaksische businessmodel, met zijn nadruk op aandeelhouderswaarde, een ongewenste invloed heeft gehad op de bedrijfsvoering, en niet alleen bij Philips. Hij neemt stelling tegen de al te gemakkelijke inkoop van eigen aandelen, ook door Europese bedrijven. Timmer schetst ook hoe Europa in technologisch opzicht in een isolement is geraakt ten opzichte van Silicon Valley en het Verre Oosten. Hoe moordende concurrentie vanuit Azië heeft geleid tot de ondergang van het ooit dominante onderdeel Consumentenelektronica. Maar ook hoe ASML en NXP konden uitgroeien tot succesvolle bedrijven. Timmer is van mening dat Philips ook zelf verantwoordelijk is geweest voor de krimp van het concern. Vanuit zijn levenslange betrokkenheid bij het bedrijf heeft hij begrip voor de dilemma's waar managers voortdurend mee geconfronteerd worden. Maar, betoogt Timmer onomwonden, Philips had vandaag de dag beslist méér kunnen zijn dan het nu is.
