Kafka's famous novella from the Limited Editions Club with interpretive illustrations from Mexican artist, José Luis Cuevas (1934-2017). This copy in a unique design binding from Czech artist, Jarmila Jelena Sobotova, former student of Jan Sobota (1939-2012). A copy of Sobotova's own description of this project is included and sheds some light on her process of creating this tremendous volume: "The top and back covers decorations are based on Cuevas interpretation of the story - metamorphosis of a man. There are two mirror images that appears skewed in abstract way. This design was created by cutting out the shapes in the leather after the book was covered. The depressions were filled with leather dust and painted with (insect like) acrylic colors." Accompanying the book is an exhibit catalogue featuring the works of both Jan and Jarmila, from the Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery at SMU in Dallas, 1995, which both artists have signed. Quarto, 28x21cm, 61pp. Illustrations by José Luis Cuevas, and signed by him at the colophon. Design binding by Jarmila Jelena Sobotova. French structure, full black goatskin with mirror image, green cutout designs on upper and lower boards. Green morocco spine label in the shape of a pedestal with an apple balancing on top, lettered in gilt. Top edge painted green, hand sewn head and tailbands in black and green silk. Green and black marbled endpapers by Sobotova. Fine condition in matching Solander box Limited to 1500 signed copies, this being #858.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Fascimile/Binding. Fascimile/Binding. Hardcover. Limited edition of 799 copies. Jan Sobota was commissioned to bind 10 copies in 'period' style. Soboto passed away, however, after completeing only two of them. One remains with his wife/archive, this is the only copy publically available. It is also the final binding he worked on prior to his death. The bible has 376 pages and nearly eight hundred paintings. It is the largest illustrated medieval manuscript in central Europe. Sobota's binding is a facsimile of the original binding. "Most comprehensive illustrated medieval manuscript in central Europe was created around the mid 14th century thanks to the initiative of Velislav, who is portrayed on fol. 188r as kneeling before a statue of St. Catherine, the patron saint of theologians and philosophers. This seems to be evidence that he was a member of the clergy, although he is not wearing a tonsure and his clothing is rather secular. He can be most probably identified with a Prague capitulary of the same name, who was a notary to Jan of Luxembourg, later a notary and a diplomat of Charles IV. The book was created in a secular, laic book-workshop with signs of stable and standardized operation. Velislav's Bible is neither a biblia pauperum (a Bible of the poor) - this type was introduced only later and typically had around thirty to forty recurring paintings - nor it is a fully illustrated Bible comprising the whole biblical text. It includes the following books: Genesis (1r-52v), Exodus (53r-88v), Daniel (89r-108r), Judges (108v-115r), Judith (115v-130r), Antichrist cycle (130v-135v), Christological cycle (136r-149r), Apocalypses (153r-168v), Apostles' deeds (169r-179v) and above that a cycle about Czech patrons saints Wenceslas and Ludmila (180r-188r). Different other individual images appear in the second half of the book. Given the fact that vast majority of images is accompanied by comments and that occasionally written names of the characters occur, the manuscript can be regarded as a medieval comics. The brushwork shows some romantic elements, with some elements of the later so-called "beautiful style." Tight, bright, and unmarred. Full leather binding, metal fixtures; full color facsimile of the textblock. 4to. np. Illus. (color plates). Limited Edition of 10 [N.B. Only two completed before Sobota's death].

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. A translation by Jiri Pober into Czech of the 1937 Kenneth Roberts novel "Northwest Passage." Size of the binding: 5 ½ in. x 8 1/8 in. x 2 1/8 in., 498+ pp. (publisher's colophon page); 2 fold-out maps with Czech titling, showing (1) Rogers' 1759 St. Francois route, & (2) North America (but not Mexico), 1765. In a striking carved leather binding by Jan Sobota, with his stamp on the back paste-down endpaper. The full, brown leather binding features a standing figure of a Colonial Ranger with a long rifle, on the front and back covers; the details are carved into the leather, on a hand-tooled, stippled, darker brown background; the spine features two carved leather long-rifles in darker brown, with stamped titling in dark brown, top-edge stained brown, sewn headbands, dark brown, suede-covered endpapers; in a dark brown, leather-textured cloth wrap-around chemise, with a lighter brown, leather title label, and a brown suede lining. In a matching, dark brown, leather-textured cloth-covered slipcase, with lighter brown leather edging to the front ends. The novel, about Major Robert Rogers' (1731-95) expedition, was a source for the 1940 King Vidor film, based on the first part of this book. The color of leather and the designs, chosen by inventive Czech bookbinder Jan Sobota, are meant to evoke a Colonial American bookbinding, the dress and arms of the period of the French & Indian War, and that of Rogers' Rangers, who figure in the story. Weight 3 lbs.
